Maine’s General Fund rang up an 8.4 percent surplus of $5.6 million in the first month of the new fiscal year, the Brennan administration said over the weekend.

Officials announced that July receipts totalled $72.8 million.

Gov. Joseph Brennan attributed the first-month bonus in part to spending by vacationers.

“State revenues indicate that the early part of the summer tourist season has been favorable,” he said, “Sales and income tax collections are a good barometer of economic activity.”
