TOSPHAM — A 21-year-old Topsham man was charged Wednesday night with arson for the fire that destroyed an abandoned apartment building on the Brunswick Naval Air Station Annex on Tuesday, the State Fire Marshal’s Office said.

In a statement, the office announced that fire investigators and Topsham police arrested Robi Saputra, 21, in the parking lot of the Merrymeeting Condos where he lives. The condos are near the base annex, where the fire took place.

Saputra was arrested without incident and taken to the Two Bridges Jail in Wiscasset, the statement said. In addition to the arson charge, he was charged with violating conditions of his bail for a prior unrelated drug offense.

The fire began when a recliner was set on fire in an outside storage building, then spread to a carport and the four-unit apartment house, fire investigators said.

Investigators said Saputra was on the base annex with three friends Tuesday night, but the others were not involved in the fire.
