CAMPOBELLO ISLAND, New Brunswick (AP) — Rescue officials in the United States and Canada say five people were pulled from the Atlantic Ocean after their vessel capsized off Canada’s Campobello Island.

The U.S. and Canadian coast guards were both contacted Saturday evening after receiving a report that five people were in the water in Canadian waters between Campobello and Deer islands, not far from Maine waters.

The occupants of the vessel had been rescued by private boats before coast guard vessels could arrive.

The passengers told rescuers their boat capsized after hitting a whale.

The Bangor Daily News says officials could not confirm that report.
