AUGUSTA — The fifth annual Best Places to Work in Maine list, based in part on employee surveys and benefits, includes six companies headquartered in Lewiston in the top 40.

The Maine State Council of the Society for Human Resources Management announced the list late last week. Winners — first, second and third places for small/medium and large companies — will be announced at an awards dinner Oct. 12 at the Ramada Conference Center in Lewiston.

Among the local top 40:

— Androscoggin Bank

— Androscoggin Home Care & Hospice

— Central Maine Healthcare

— Evergreen MGA

— Geiger

— Oxford Networks

Some others have a presence in Western Maine but aren’t headquartered here, including New Balance Athletic Shoe and T-MobileUSA.

Companies with a minimum of 15 employees had to register to be included in the contest and then took part in assessments. Last year, the human resources group came out with a top 31.
