WILTON — Tractor-trailers bearing the name Walmart and traversing the Weld Road are not lost. They are en route to a warehouse at the former Bass Shoe property now owned by Western Maine Development.
Only a small handwritten sign at the entrance on the Weld Road indicates a Walmart Warehouse on site but starting Monday, the retail store has rented space until November to store inventory while an expansion project is undertaken at the Mexico store, said Joanne Reed from Western Maine Development.
It has rented about 55,000 square feet from the approximate 350,000 square feet available at the former shoe shop, she said. The large warehouse is located behind Sykes, formerly known as ICT.
Attempts to reach the Walmart corporate office were unsuccessful Monday while local Mexico store management declined comment referring to the corporate office.
