WILTON — Selectmen voted 3-1 Tuesday to form a committee to review town ordinances.

The move follows a public forum between residents and police Chief Dennis Brown last week when a resident suggested a committee take a look at the laws, some considered outdated, Town Manager Rhonda Irish said.

The committee’s task will include looking at ordinances on dogs, curfews, parking and other areas, she said. Town officials have started working on the parking ordinance, which does not require a town meeting to change, she added.

Five people have already volunteered to serve on the committee, she said Selectmen agreed that a representative from the Planning Board, a police officer and the town’s code enforcement officer, along with four residents at large should make up the committee.

The board also suggested that a time frame be set for the committee and monthly reviews be given of their work. The results will be presented to the board and eventually to residents for a vote.

In other business, the board voted unanimously to retain the East Wilton Fire Station and in the next 60 days develop a plan for painting the roof. The motion also included bringing the East Wilton Neighborhood Association into a conversation about the building and playground used by local youngsters.

During his quarterly report on the Wilton Fire and Rescue, Chief Sonny Dunham asked the board to discuss what should be done with the vacant  fire station. He said the $200 allotted for it annually is not enough to fix the building and asked if the town wants to put more money into it.

If it’s not used, the property could revert to the previous owners, the town manager advised.

Board members agreed with Selectman Russell Black that it’s too valuable an asset for the kids in East Wilton to let that happen.

Irish also updated the board on last week’s public hearing on the Canal Street Bridge replacement. The Maine Department of Transportation is set to start the work May 1, 2011, and be finished in July before the Blueberry Festival.

The bridge will be closed for the two months. The boat ramp will be open but boaters will have to use Canal Street and be prepared to turn their trucks and boats around in the tight space near the lake, she said.

The board wanted to continue looking at options for a sidewalk and replacement of the sewer line extending along the bridge during the next few months.
