HEBRON — Hebron Academy Head of School John King has announced that seven students from Hebron Academy have earned the designation of AP Scholars by the College Board in recognition of their exceptional achievement on the college-level Advanced Placement Program Exam.
The AP Program offers students the opportunity to take challenging college-level courses while still in high school, and to receive college credit, advance placement or both for successful performance on the AP Exam.
Earning the distinction of AP Scholar with Honor are Emma Leavitt, Cory O’Brien and Emily Powers, all graduates in the class of 2010. The three students qualified for the award by achieving a score of 3 or higher on four or more AP exams.
Leavitt is the daughter of Anne Gass and Richard Leavitt of Gray and received the Hebron Cup at graduation, the school’s highest honor. She was selected by Hebron’s residential faculty to be a student proctor, a position awarded to senior students who demonstrate leadership, communication skills and the ability to work well with their peers. They are instrumental in managing the school’s Residential Life Program. A three-sport athlete, Leavitt was class secretary, a member of the Green Key admissions tour guide group and performed in the all-school musical productions each year. She is attending Tufts University.
The son of Brenda and Robert O’Brien of Tewksbury, Mass., O’Brien captained the football team and was a member of the hockey and lacrosse teams. He served as president of his sophomore class and as a member of the school’s Director’s Council. This fall, he is attending Babson College.
Now attending Bowdoin College, Powers was active at Hebron as proctor, captain of the girls’ basketball team, and four-year participant in the school’s orchestra and musical and drama productions. As senior class president, Powers offered the commencement address at the Hebron graduation ceremony. She was inducted into the Cum Laude honor society as a junior, and along with Leavitt, served as co-editor of the Hebron newspaper. She is the daughter of Susan and William Powers of Auburn.
King also announced that five additional members of the Class of 2010 from Hebron Academy have qualified for the AP Scholar Award by completing three or more AP exams with scores of 3 or higher. The AP Scholars are Benjamin Blais, Alessandra Hankinson, Seok-Won Jee, Jeremy Kleven and Nicholas Stuer.
Blais is the son of Mike Blais of Minot and Jamie Anderson of Auburn. This fall, he is attending the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry. A three-sport athlete, he captained the junior varsity soccer and hockey teams and was inducted into the Cum Laude honor society in his senior year.
Hankinson, the daughter of Anne Hankinson of Phippsburg, served as coordinator of the Green Key admissions tour guides, sang in the school musical for three years, played field hockey and captained the girls’ tennis team. She is attending the University of Vermont.
Jee is the son of Jung Yn Yang and Nam Woong Jee of Korea. He was a senior proctor, a member of the Community Service team and the Maine state championship Math Team, sang in the school musical productions and was inducted into the Cum Laude honor society as a junior. He is currently attending the University of Wisconsin at Madison.
Now attending Denison University, Kleven was inducted to Hebron’s Cum Laude honor society as a junior. He served as a senior proctor, participated in the spring drama productions and wrote for the school newspaper. A three-sport athlete, he was also an admissions tour guide for four years. Kleven is the son of Veronica Vargas and Alfredo Diaz of Auburn.
Stuer is the son of Anne and Gary Stuer of Norway and is enrolled at Quinnipiac University. Captain of the football and track teams, he was also a cast member in the school’s musical and drama offerings, served as an admissions tour guide for four years and became a member of the Cum Laude honor society in his senior year.
The students took AP Exams in May 2010 after completing their courses. About 18 percent of the more than 1.8 million high school students who took AP Exams performed at a sufficiently high level to merit the recognition of AP Scholar.
