100 years ago,1910

Although arranged in rather of a hurry, the big wrestling match tonight at City Hall under the management of the C. A. C. should draw a big crowd, for it will bring Zbyszko here again, matched with Joe Lemm, a man of much more ability than Mort Henderson, who was defeated here Tuesday night by the Polander.

Lemm stood Zbyszko off at Portland Wednesday night, the big man being unable to secure even a fall. Zbyszko tried every trick known to the wrestling world in order to get his opponent’s shoulders on the mat but he was unsuccessful.

50 years ago, 1960

The outlook is for a mild winter — at least that’s the forecast in the latest issue of the famous Geiger Brothers Farmers’ Almanac published in Lewiston and which is now out.

The almanac, which has been published for 144 consecutive years, is as full of weather predictions, useful information, jokes, puzzles and poetry as ever.

A planting and garden calendar, the positions of the planets, how to eat a lobster, instructions on growing house plants, the story of how leather is made and an article on “The Romance of the Pretzel” — all these are in the almanac.

25 years ago, 1985

The public is invited to attend a candlelight vigil to mark the eve of the Geneva summit at 4:45 p.m. Tuesday in Lewiston’s Kennedy Park.

The vigil, organized by the Maine Freeze Campaign, will be one of fourteen throughout the state. The gesture is meant to encourage the ending of the nuclear arms race.
