AUBURN — Lewiston-Auburn Community Little Theatre’s production of “A Christmas Carol – The Musical,” running Dec. 1-5, is a family show in the truest sense.
Children, parents and grandparents should love this classic story enhanced by lots of song and dance. There are also family connections among the performers, many of whom are favorites of past CLT productions.
Ebenezer Scrooge is played by Mitchell Clyde Thomas, a veteran director and actor in dozens of CLT productions. His daughter Hayden, a fourth-grader at Durham Community School, and his son, Elias, a second-grader, both have roles in this show; both were also in CLT’s 2007 production.
Roger Philippon, another CLT favorite, appears as Bob Cratchit. Celeste Philippon, his wife, has directed and stage managed numerous CLT shows. This show marks her on-stage debut for CLT in the role of Mrs. Cratchit.
Director Katie St. Pierre said the challenges of working with a large cast on a spectacular set with numerous scene changes were made easier because everyone pitched in wherever they could.
“I have been talking about directing this show for three years,” said St. Pierre, who appeared as The Ghost of Christmas Past in CLT’s 2007 production of “A Christmas Carol – The Musical,” for which she also was assistant director.
St. Pierre said there will be several new elements in her version, such as the return of all the ghosts in the scene with The Ghost of Christmas Future.
The director also said Maddy Leslie’s portrayal of Tiny Tim is a delight. “Her voice is great and she is a very good actress.” The 10-year-old fifth-grader at St. Dominic Academy played Tiny Tim in last year’s production of “A Christmas Carol” at The Public Theatre in Lewiston. Her father, Rit Leslie, plays Mr. Smythe, and her 8-year-old sister, Mia-Angelina Leslie, appears as Grace Smythe.
St. Pierre said revolving stage pieces make the play’s 13 scenes flow seamlessly. The 18-piece orchestra, under the direction of Rebecca Caron, is on-stage throughout the show.
Vincent Ratsavong is choreographer and assistant director for the show. He also plays The Ghost of Christmas Present.
CLT veteran Michael Litchfield is The Ghost of Christmas Past. Alice Ruvane is Blind Old Hag and The Ghost of Christmas Future. James Kramlich is the Ghost of Jacob Marley.
Costumes are by Ellen Hodgkin and a team of five costumers.
St. Pierre said musical highlights include “Fezziwig’s Annual Christmas Ball” and “A Place Called Home,” which has become a traditional holiday song.
Among the show’s other numbers are “Hear the Bells,” “Jolly Good Time,” “Nothing To Do With Me,” “Link By Link,” “Lights of Long Ago,” “Christmas Together,” “Dancing on Your Grave,” and “God Bless Us Everyone.”
Also in the cast are Al Farrington as A Beadle, a role he played in 2007; Glenn Atkins as Poulterer; and Dan Crawford as Mr. Fezziwig and his sons Connor as Ebenezer at 12 at the factory and Garrett as Jacon Marley as a young man. Other cast members are Deb Kramlich, Boyd Scott, Bruce Gerry, Cody Malpass and Chris Camire.
