Catholic schools have always been known for the excellent preparation they offer each of their students for the challenges they will face in life. With the focus of a rigorous academic program, Saint Dominic Academy strives to equip each member of our school community, Pre-K – 12, with the intellectual tools they will need to continue their education beyond high school graduation. The National Honor Society at St. Dom’s recognizes those students who have achieved high levels of academic and leadership excellence.

NHS is founded upon four principles: Scholarship, Leadership, Service, and Character. The NHS selection criteria require that a student achieve academically, demonstrate strong character in the ordinary discipline of the day, provide service to the community and the school, and display leadership in word and action.

The current 37 member NHS is responsible for tutoring students, leading the student body both inside and outside of classes in terms of behavior and character, and several other aspects of life in the St. Dom’s community. The organization hosts several “fun days” for the entire school as well as a Freshman game night early in the year to welcome the incoming students and give them an opportunity to bond.

Several fundraisers allow the National Honor Society to donate upwards of $500 a year to various charities. Our most successful and delicious fund raiser is our annual Thanksgiving pie sale. The organization also rewards its members with an annual trip to Portland to visit the Portland Museum of Art and a Portland Pirates game, as well as two visits to colleges in the New England area.

Some of our service activities have included planting pink tulips for breast cancer awareness, collecting toys for the Little Wanderers, hosting a Red Cross blood drive in February, and various independent projects completed by the members of NHS throughout the year. Each member is responsible for completing 20 hours of community service during the academic year.
