LEWISTON — John Thomas Jalbert, 98, of Lewiston died peacefully, Tuesday, Feb. 22, at d’Youville Pavilion.

He was born in Lewiston, Sept. 24, 1912, a son of the late Alphonse and Clemence (Grandmaison) Jalbert. He married Cecile Nadeau on Sept. 29, 1939, in Lewiston at Saints Peter and Paul Church. John worked in the local shoe industry and retired from Knapp Shoe in 1978 after 22 years as a Goodyear stitcher.

He was a skilled hockey player with the Club St. Dominique of Lewiston in the 1930s. A career highlighted by a train ride to New York, and participating in a game at Madison Square Garden. John was proud of his participation, along with brother Adrien, in the Boston Marathon.

He was a lifelong avid fan of the Boston Bruins and Red Sox. John enjoyed many summer vacations with his family at Old Orchard Beach. He also spent many hours fishing area lakes and ponds with family members.

He is survived by a brother, Roger and wife, Georgette; three sons, John and his wife, Maryann, from Mechanic Falls, Bert and his wife, Judy, of Lisbon Falls and Michael and his wife, Liane, of Lewiston; a daughter, Jeannine Jalbert Pelletier and her husband, Normand, of Lewiston; a daughter-in-law, Maryann Sullivan of California; eight grandchildren, Anne-Marie Pelletier Flaherty, Gary Pelletier, Jeffrey Jalbert, Katie Jalbert Kelley, Greg Jalbert, Thomas Jalbert, Stephanie Jalbert Emmons and Travis Jalbert; 10 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his wife of 55 years, Cecile; a son, Roland; sisters, Yvette and Jeanne; and brothers, Adrien, Henri, Gerard, Emile, Roland, Edmond and the Rev. Paul.
