American Legion meeting

LISBON FALLS — Nelson-Conley American Legion Post 66 will hold a regular meeting Wednesday, March 2, at 7 p.m., at the Slovak Hall upstairs meeting room on Avery Street. All members, prospective members and active-duty personnel are invited to attend.

Roast beef supper

MECHANIC FALLS — The Mechanic Falls Historical Society will hold its “Almost Famous Roast Beef Community Supper” from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 5, at Congregational Hall, 64 Elm St. The cost is $7 for adults and $5 for children 12 and under. In addition to the main course of roast beef, mashed potatoes and vegetables, the supper will also include a turkey pot pie.

YWCA forms new committee

LEWISTON — The YWCA has announced the formation of a Facilities Advisory Committee which will guide building improvement expenditures. Committee members are Bruce Damon, chairman of Lewiston Energy Committee and YWCA Facilities Committee chairman; Lee Young, YWCA board chairwoman; George Gendron, Lewiston business leader and YWCA donor; Mike Grimmer, vice president/division leader of facilities management at St. Mary’s Health System; Mitch DeBlois, president of DeBlois Electric; Philip H. Morgan, retired vice president of operations and engineering at Seltzer & Rydholm, Inc. and YWCA donor; and Steve Ness, president of Ness Oil Company. 

The YWCA Facilities Committee began meeting in December and meets regularly. Meetings will become more frequent once an energy audit is completed by the Trane company. The purpose of the committee is to help the YWCA Board make the best use of campaign funds already raised and earmarked for building energy and systems upgrades.

Mushers place in races

BRIDGTON —Local musher took honors in two recent dog racing events.

International Sled Dog Racing Association musher Betsy McGettigan of Norway took sixth place in the adult four-dog speed class at the Mushers Bowl sled race on Jan. 23. McGettigan finished the 8-mile course with a total time of 31 minutes, 25 seconds.

Heather Brannen of Poland took first place in the adult two-dog speed class, finishing the 11-mile course with a total time of 41 minutes, 26 seconds.

Aisling Shepherd of Norway took 11th place in the adult four-dog speed class, finishing the 8-mile course with a total time of 46 minutes, 9 seconds.

At the Burke Mountain Sled Dog Dash skijoring race on Jan. 30, Brannen took 1st in the adult two-dog speed class . Brannen finished the 9-mile course with a total time of 34 minutes, 30 seconds.
