GORHAM — The Maine Renegades squirt hockey team played some very good hockey in the 11th Annual Maine Renegades Tournament this past weekend. Despite their fine effort, they finished with a 1-2-1 record.

The Rens began the tournament on Friday with a hard-fought, 2-1 loss to the Southern Maine Breakers. The Breakers scored two quick goals late in the second period. The squirts worked hard and had many chances to tie but couldn’t get the puck into the net.

Both teams had 18 shots on net. Casey Cloutier scored the lone goal for the Renegades, with assists going to Owen Cox and Thomas Levasseur. Hard hat player of the game went to Evan Cox.

Saturday morning, the Renegades rebounded with a 2-1 win over Cape Ann, Mass. Evan Cox and Ryan Blouin each scored unassisted goals. Goaltender Jacob Smith turned aside 17 shots on net, allowing his only goal late in the game. Hard hat player of the game went to Andrew Verrault.

The Renegades then faced the Maine Freeze and lost 4-1. It was a tight game until the Freeze scored two late third-period goals to seal the win. Blouin scored with an assist from Cam Niven for the Renegades. Hard hat player of the game went to Tyler Marcoux.

In the consolation game Sunday morning, the Renegades skated to a 4-4 tie with the Breakers. The game featuresd numerous lead changes and spirited play from start to finish. Blouin led the way with a goal and two assists. Niven collected two goals. Reed Hopkins added a goal and an assist.

The squirts are off next weekend before they return to action to compete against Newburyport, Mass., on March 20.

The Renegades will be hosting another open house this week on Friday, March 11. Tryouts will be held on March 15 and 17 at USM. Details may be found on the team’s website, www.mainerenegades.com.
