JAY — Selectmen will hold a special meeting at 6 p.m. Monday at the town office to discuss an opportunity to acquire land from Verso Paper at French Falls.
Jonathan LaBonte from Androscoggin Land Trust will explain what is ultimately a donation of about 30 acres at French Falls to the town, Town Manager Ruth Cushman said. The land will be used for recreation and is at the site of the Whistle Stop Trail. LaBonte will bring maps and explain the proposal to the board.
As part of working out a complicated land transfer, the land trust is using the donation as leverage to acquire funds to buy other property for public use, Cushman said.
“In order to leverage money for the acquisition of this land we will have to put in a letter of intent and there has to be a public vote to determine the development that would take place on the land,” she said. “The reason for the special meeting is that this all has to be submitted prior to April 1st.”
