LEWISTON — “It was very informative,” said Lewiston Youth Advisory Council (LYAC) member Marissa Zanoni after attending a Maine Distracted Driving Summit hosted in Portland by Sen. Bill Diamond and AAA of Northern New England.

Zanoni and LYAC members Jake Bergeron and Kon Maiwan attended at the invitation of AAA’s Rayette Hudon, who had interacted with the group previously. Diamond said he is sponsoring legislation to enhance Maine’s distracted driving law to include no texting while driving.

LYAC members listened to various speakers, including Diamond, AAA representatives, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, National Safety Council and the University of Massachusetts-Amherst-Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering.

Attendees saw videos about the dangers of texting and cell phone use while driving and Maiwan participated in a student panel discussion, “Changing Attitudes and How to Reach Us.”
