WELD — The Fire Department’s new pumper truck arrived Thursday to little fanfare, Selectman Nancy Stowell said.

Dave Stewart of the Fire Department drove the 1984 GMC Brigadier from Northeast Emergency Apparatus in Auburn to Weld, she said.

The purchase was from the Fire Department in Spofford, N.H., and approved by voters at the annual town meeting March 5. Chief Wallis Tyler and Assistant Chief Bruce Farnham negotiated the $15,000 price, with 10 percent added for modifications or minor repairs, Stowell said.

The truck has about 21,000 original miles and is in very good condition for its age, she said. It has a poly tank, a Detroit Diesel 671T engine with an automatic transmission, ground ladders, four lengths of suction hose, OnSpot chains and a new tank level display system with remote display, she said. It meets national fire standards.

The timing could not have been more perfect, Stowell, chairman of the board, said.

“Weld’s existing tanker was a 1969 truck with an attached fabricated metal tank,” she said. “The cost of installing a new tank on the old chassis, outfitting it with a new portable transfer pump and complying with the two sets of National Fire Protection Association standards would have exceeded $20,000.”

The old tanker sits in the parking lot with a sign that reads: “Make an offer by April 1st.”
