CHESTERVILLE — Spring tree tapping isn’t necessarily confined to just sugar maples.
Those who want to learn about tapping other trees such as red maple and birch are invited to a discussion and woodlot walk from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, April 9, at 129 Chesterville Hill Road.
Extension Educator Dave Fuller and state forester Patty Cormier will demonstrate how to tap trees and how to identify which trees to tap, especially when they don’t have their leaves yet. They will also discuss the management of those species if small syrup production is a tapper’s plan.
As time allows, Fuller will also show the work he has done on his woodlot for two of his other goals, wildlife habitat and aesthetics.
This event is free and open to all; no need to preregister. It is sponsored by the University of Maine Extension Service, Small Woodland Owners Association of Maine, and the Maine Forest Service.
Directions: Turn onto Route 41/156 in Farmington Falls off Route 2, turn right after going over cement bridge and immediately on your left is the Chesterville Hill Road (not marked). Fuller’s house is on the right, number 129. Please park all on one side of the road.
Contact Patty Cormier at (207) 592-2238 or [email protected] for more information.
