Mountain Valley 6, Livermore Falls 4
RUMFORD — Adam Volkernick scattered eight hits and drew ample run support as Mountain Valley rolled to a 6-4 victory over Livermore Falls in a MVC baseball tilt Tuesday.

The Falcons (1-0) built a 5-2 advantage through the first three frames before adding an insurance run in the sixth. Izaak Mills led Mountain Valley with three hits and one RBI, while Zack Radcliffe belted a pair of hits.

The Andies (0-3) scored one run in each of the first two innings before the offense fell flat. Hunter Brett went the distance for Livermore and suffered the loss.

Collegiate Baseball
Bates sweeps UMF, 12-2, 9-0
LEWISTON— The Bates College baseball squad notched a pair of convincing wins Tuesday, claiming both sides of a non-conference doubleheader against the University of Maine at Farmington.

In the opener, the Bobcats banged out 13 hits and rode effective pitching to earn the win. Bates struck early with four runs in the fourth inning, leading things off with three straight hits.

Sophomore lefthander Kevin McGregor started the game for Bates and went four innings, allowing just one run. First-year reliever Brad Reynolds allowed one unearned run in two innings of relief, and senior Paul Chiampa made his first relief appearance of the season, throwing a shutout seventh inning.

Sophomore righthander Dale Winchenbach started the game for UMF, allowing seven runs (six earned) in three innings of work. 

In the nightcap, the Bobcats scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning. First-year starting pitcher Dean Bonneau appreciated the big early lead and put inthe performance of his young career. Bonneau struck out 11 and allowed just one hit. 

Ryan Sonberg led off the first with a single to center field, then stole second base and moved to third on Griff Tewksbury’s groundout and scored on Chris Burke’s scarifice fly to center field. After five straight Bobcats reached base, Rich Velotta scored on a passed ball to give Bates a 4-0 lead.

The Bobcats extended their lead from 5-0 to 9-0 in the fourth inning, which featured a two-run home run inside the left field foul pole by Gordy Webb, his second homer of the season.

Bates junior Demetrios Gatzgiannis came on to start the fifth inning and went two shutout innings with four strikeouts. First-year pitcher A.J. DeBenedictis then made his first appearance of the season, striking out two batters in a perect seventh inning. 

Ben Pearson was tagged with the loss in Game 2. Garneau was 4-for-7 on the day for Farmington, while junior Brian Jenkins had two hits.

Men’s lacrosse

UMF 14, Thomas 13 (OT)
Waterville — The Thomas College Women’s Lacrosse team fell to the University of Maine at Farmington 14-13 in overtime in college women’s lacrosse action Tuesday.

The Terriers got a strong performance from senior Megan Denby, as she netted six goals — including the 100th tally of her career. Fellow senior Kiley Jolicoeur scored two goals and tallied 12 draw controls on senior day. Farmington’s Amie Daniels also netted six goals and dished out one assist to lead all scorers.

Denby is only the second lacrosse player in Thomas history (both men and women’s teams) to hit the 100 goal milestone. Denby tallied her big goal at the 26:22 mark in the second half.

Sophomore Ceara DiBiase started the scoring off when she hit the back of the net 45 seconds into the game, but Farmington answered right back when Daniels found Emma Morrison for the equalizer. The Terriers came right back as Jolicoeur connected at the 28:11 mark and Denby put the Terriers up two with her first goal of the game at the 27:33 mark.

It was a close contest for most of the first half, with the Terriers jumping ahead to one and two goal leads. Farmington was relentless, as they tied the host team five times in the fist. With just 33 seconds remaining in the first quarter, Denby blasted her fifth goal of the game to put the Terriers up 10-8 at the break.

Denby opened the scoring with her fifth goal of the game on an extra player opportunity. Daniels brought the Beavers (2-9) back within two with a free position goal at the 26:42 mark. After Denby hit her sixth and final goal of the game, Farmington went on a three-goal run, ignited by Molly Carbin’s free position goal at the 22:26 mark. Daniels and Alyssa Neptune also kicked in goals in the UMF run.

The Terriers broke the 12-12 tie when Katie Foyle scored on a free position shot at the 14:13 mark. The Terriers carried a 13-12 lead until Daniels hit the equalizer with 53 seconds remaining in regulation.

A set of yellow cards put Farmington down two players as time ran out on the first OT period, but first-year player Miranda Levesque hit the eventual game-winner in the second half of the overtime period on a free position shot.

The Terriers also earned two yellows as time ran out and they were unable to find the equalizer.      

Bates 18, Endicott 6

BEVERLY, Mass. — Sophomore attack Jenn Brallier scored four goals while junior Joan O’Neill and first-year Bridget Meedzan each added three as the No. 20 nationally ranked Bates women’s lacrosse team toppled Endicott, 18-6, Tuesday night at Endicott Stadium. The visitors came out firing with eight straight goals to open the game and built a 9-2 halftime lead before outscoring the hosts 9-4 over the final 30 minutes of play.

Junior Jenna Dannis and senior Briana Gross each added two goals for the Bobcats.

The Gulls (11-6) were led by three goals from Holly Davis. Kellie Cunningham chipped in three goals, five ground balls, and four caused turnovers in the setback while classmate Molly Sowles (Yarmouth, Maine) added a goal and an assist.

Brallier, Meedzan, and O’Neill each scored twice in the opening 20 minutes of play as Bates took a commanding 8-0 lead.

Morgan DeShaw found Cunningham at 7:19 to stop the run before linking up with Davis less than two minutes later to make it 8-2.

Junior Lindsay Thompson capped the first half scoring with an unassisted tally at 3:55 to give Bates a seven-goal lead entering the break.

Cunningham’s second of the evening came just 39 seconds into the second frame after taking a feed from Sowles, but Brallier responded a minute later with her third of the night to push the lead back to seven.

Junior Michelle Loizzo’s first assist of the season came on Sowles’ goal at 27:13 to pull the Gulls within six.  The Bobcats countered with two straight to extend the advantage to 12-4 with just over 20 minutes remaining.

Davis capped Endicott’s scoring with back-to-back goals at 19:32 and 17:27 before Bates rattled off six unanswered to close it out.

Senior goalie Mara Krueger picked up the win for Bates, making three saves. Leah Neff made 11 saves for the Gulls, who will be the No. 2 seed in the upcoming TCCC Tournament.

Bates was led by three caused turnovers apiece from first-year Wally Pierce and Dannis. Brallier collected six draw controls.        

Collegiate Softball

UMF 3, Castleton State 1
CASTLETON, Vt. — Lily Barry and McKell Barnes hit back-to-back home runs in the sixth inning, while Emma Vaillancourt out-dueled Taylor Lively on the mound as fifth-seeded University of Maine at Farmington (UMF) defeated fourth-seeded Castleton State in collegiate softball action Tuesday.

Lively carried a 1-0 lead into the sixth and quickly retired the first two batters she faced. With two outs, Barry and Barnes went back-to-back to give the Beavers (10-17) a 2-1 lead. Kaitlyn Bartlett followed with a ringing double down the left field line, and Shannon Mitchell traded places with her after a double to the gap in left-center field to make it 3-1.

The Spartans (16-19) took the lead in the fourth inning when Tori Fearon led off with a double to right-centerfield, moved to third on a wild pitch and came around to score on a Sarah Flore sacrifice fly to left. 

Vaillancourt struck out 11 in the complete-game win, scattering four hits and walking two batters. Lively allowed three earned runs on six hits and struck out nine.

Women’s lacrosse

Bates 18, Endicott 6

BEVERLY, Mass. — Jenn Brallier scored four goals while Joan O’Neill and Bridget Meedzan each added three as Bates toppled Endicott, 18-6, in women’s lacrosse.
