ACTON — Fire officials say they have a suspect in a string of seven fires that were reported in the overnight hours in the same area of the small southern Maine town of Acton.

Sgt. Joel Davis from the state fire marshal’s office says the suspect is being medically evaluated. No charges have been filed, and the man’s identity wasn’t released.

About 75 firefighters from 10 departments in Maine and nearby New Hampshire responded. The fires destroyed two houses, a pontoon boat, an SUV, a shed and damaged a third house. All the homes were seasonal dwellings. Officials say there was a small woods fire, as well.

Steve McCausland of the Maine Public Safety Department says the fires are being treated as arson. No firefighters were hurt.
