GILEAD — A Lisbon Falls woman was killed late Friday afternoon when her car drifted across the centerline and slammed into an oncoming school bus on Route 2.

Police said Doris Carberry, 81, died instantly after crashing into the Carrabassett Valley Academy bus, which was carrying seven people, Oxford County Deputy Chris Davis said.

None of those aboard the bus were hurt, he said. The bus was carrying four students and three staff members from the ski school in Carrabassett Valley.

The crash forced the closure of a long section of Route 2 as rescue crews responded and police began their investigation.

Emergency crews had to cut into Carberry’s Buick before they determined that she was dead.

A LifeFlight helicopter was initially called to the scene but emergency crews cancelled the request a short time later.

The Oxford County Sheriff’s Department was heading the investigation while Maine State Police were reconstructing the crash site.

The Maine Warden Service was also assisting, using a mapping program that may help determine what led to the crash.

Carberry had been driving east when her car drifted over the centerline, Davis said.

Police detoured traffic around the scene, setting up barricades at the Flat Road intersection.

Route 2 in Gilead runs along the eastern edge of the White Mountain National Forest and stretches into New Hampshire.
