NORWAY — A kitten that was rescued from the Pennesseewassee Stream by workers at the Opera House in January has settled into his new home happily, his owner reports.
“The kitty is doing great,” said Leslie Hennessey, who works as a nail technician at Prime Cuts and Nails on Main Street.
On Jan. 3, Hennessey and colleague Chris Ryan watched as construction workers on the Opera House project on Main Street staged a rescue of the kitten from the water after one of the workers spotted it from the top of the 60-foot crane. The stream runs through the downtown business district on the south side of Main Street.
Workers from Chabot Construction in Greene, who were hired by the town of Norway to stabilize the back wall of the historic 1894 downtown building, heard the kitten’s cries and saw it pacing up and down a small ice island several yards from the edge.
One of the crew members who was wearing wading boots, climbed down the embankment into the river, which was shallow at that point, to grab the black kitten, thought to be three or four months old at the time.
The kitten was named Chabot by construction workers and Matrix by Ryan in honor of the Matrix Hair Color business. As a compromise Ryan decided to call it Chabot-Matrix.
The owner was never located.
