AUBURN — Voters passed a $34.7 million school budget Tuesday in what was a heavy voter turnout for a school budget referendum. The vote was 556-404.
The school budget is up slightly, 1.5 percent, from the current $34.1 million spending plan, but it reduces property taxes spent on education in Auburn by $181,000. Overall, school spending is up and property-tax reliance is down because the School Department is using $855,000 from its emergency savings account and because Auburn received more money for education from the state.
The controversial budget, which had a rocky ride between the Auburn School Committee and the Auburn City Council on its way to referendum, does not cut sports but does eliminate nine positions, resulting in three teacher layoffs.
