PERU — Despite rain-threatening skies and raw 45-degree temperatures, civic-minded citizens braved the elements Saturday for the town’s annual ball field cleanup day.
“It was a great turnout,” Tim Holland, Peru outdoor recreation foreman, said. “We were able to get a lot done, including grading the field, raking and clearing away the brush, before the rain started falling.
“We are very grateful for their help,” he added, “and the active support we get from the community.”
The Peru field is home to six youth baseball and softball teams during the summer months.
A fundraiser is currently under way to build a recreational support building, which would contain bathrooms/changing areas, for the Peru ball field. There would be a bottle-can redemption container, adjacent to the old Peru School, for people to bring their empties to support the building fund.
“We have collected $2,500 of the $10,000 building construction goal,” Holland said.
