FARMINGTON — Registrations are being accepted this week for the third annual fishing derby for adults with developmental disabilities.
Farmington Recreation Department, in conjunction with sponsor Coca-Cola Bottling of Farmington, is taking names of those who want to participate in the derby, now through Friday, June 24.
The derby will take place from 11 a.m. to noon July 1 at Rollo Pond in Abbott Park on the University of Maine at Farmington campus. The derby is free but reserved for adults with developmental disabilities. They need to be accompanied by either a family member or supervisor from a local support agency.
If more than 30 people are interested in participating, a lottery system will be used to assign who will fish at the start of the derby and who will replace anyone who has caught their bag limit of one rainbow trout.
Once a total of 30 fish are caught or one hour passes, whichever comes first, the derby will end.
Anyone wishing to enter the derby must contact the Farmington Recreation Department office by calling 778-3464 by Friday.
Calls may be placed and registration information left on the office answering machine, day or night. Those calling are asked to leave a participant’s name, telephone number, town of residence, agency affiliation (if any) and derby assistant’s name. A member of the department staff will contact those calling the following week to confirm their registration.
The Recreation Department will not be able to furnish fishing equipment. Life Enrichment Advancing People, or LEAP, will furnish a limited number of fishing poles to those who need one.
Bait, such as worms, night crawlers or lures, is also the responsibility of the participant.
For more information, call the Recreation Department at 778-3464.
