MEXICO — Delilah, Neptune, Thor, Zeus and Zorro were big hits at Terrific Tuesday at Calvin P. Lyons Hall in the town Office building Tuesday.
Their handler, Rob “The Snake Man” White of Mexico, had 82 children for the show and tell presentation sponsored by the Mexico Public Library.
The question asked most often was “May I touch him?”
Some of the most interesting answers to Tuesday’s snake questions included: snakes need heat to digest food; after a large meal they can go for an entire year, in the wild, without eating; the favorite food of Zorro, a California King snake, are diamondback rattlesnakes; and the longest living snake was 38 years old.
The much-awaited audience touch and feel session with the five snakes concluded the presentation. The children, and some adults, most without an ounce of hesitation, had the snakes, including a corn snake, ball python and red-tail boa, wrapped around their arms, shoulders and wrists.
Virtually every member of the audience took the opportunity to touch and get close to one of the snakes.
“I have always been fascinated with snakes and animals,” White said. He began the presentations 14 years ago at a Head Start program.
“I love having children as my audience and teaching them to overcome fear of snakes and how to respect them,” he said.
