According to all reports, Maine will have a “dry” July Fourth this year. It is said that the lid will be nailed down tight on July 1 and that it will remain down until after the fall election. The cities and towns in Kennebec County have been dry, so it is said, for the past month. The drought also struck Lewiston about a month ago and there are no prospects of a letup in this city.
50 years ago, 1961
Lewiston City Clerk Lucien Lebel yesterday urged persons wanting holiday fishing licenses or birth certificates for traveling to obtain them before the office closes this afternoon. Lebel said he doesn’t like to be disturbed during the holiday weekend, as he has been in the past.

A single fallen tree left much of downtown Lewiston in the dark Sunday evening when power lines fell in the wake of a sudden windstorm. Street lights in the downtown district remained dark for several hours as Central Maine Power Co. attempted to restore electricity, according to spokesman Tom Bennett. Unexpected heavy winds moved quickly through Lewiston shortly after 6:30 p.m. with a slight amount of rain falling.
