WINTHROP — Monmouth edged Maranacook, 3-1, to capture the Apple Valley Babe Ruth baseball championship.

Alex Curtis led the champs with two singles and two RBIs. Kyle Fletcher had two singles. Jacob Weeks hit a go-ahead single in the fifth inning.

Winning pitcher Nate Gagne combined with D.J. McHugh on the mound to allow one run on three hits. They struck out seven.

Richard Hall absorbed the loss for Maranacook. Hall combined with Zach Elwell to allow three runs on eight hits with seven strikeouts. Hitters for Maranacook were Nick Lacasse, Hall and Matthew Delmar.
