The remains of World War II 2nd Lt. Robert S. Emerson of Norway were quietly returned to his hometown Wednesday afternoon under escort from local and state police. The airman, a popular Norway High School graduate, was one of five U.S. Air Force airmen killed when their B-25J Mitchell Bomber crashed in the Philippines on April 3, 1945. Although the bodies were recovered, it took 66 years for the U.S. Department of Defense to identify the remains of the five airmen individually. Emerson, who was 25 when he died, will be buried at 2 p.m. Saturday at Norway Pine Grove Cemetery in Paris next to his parents and two brothers. The American Legion Post will hold a special memorial service for him before the burial. Gov. Paul LePage has ordered that the flags of the United States and the state of Maine be flown at half-staff Saturday to honor Emerson.
