AUBURN — In a game pitting rivals, South Lewiston outlasted Auburn Suburban for the District 5 Little League softball championship, 6-5, capturing its first title in 12 years at Sweetser Field.
Auburn got things started in the first inning when Grace Beaudet and Sarah Sterling opened with consecutive walks, followed by a Piper Norcross line drive double that plated both.
Jordan Mynahan, who gave up two hits and struck out eight, shut down Auburn immediately with a strikeout and a groundout to third.
South Lewiston got one back in its half of the first with a walk by Eliza Beaudoin, a single by Mynahan, and a hard grounder by Emily Mousseau to plate Beaudoin from third.
The champions pulled ahead for good in the third when Beaudoin walked and Mynahan singled, followed by a two-run double by Mousseau into the left field gap.
Meagan Gosselin scored Mousseau from second with a single.
Mousseau led South Lewiston with two hits and three RBIs. Danielle Cyr made the defensive play of the day, a shoestring catch with the bases loaded that saved at least two runs from scoring.
Piper Norcross led ASLL with a double and seven strikeouts on the mound.
Game 1 of the championship series ended with a 24-7 lopsided victory for South Lewiston at home.
Mousseau picked up the victory on the mound. She struck out five and gave up no hits in three innings of work. Madison Mercier hit a game-changing, bases-loaded double. Lewiston led 6-5 at the time.
Also coming up big for South Lewiston were Beaudoin, Mynahan, Gosselin and Lexi Poulin.
South Lewiston now travels to Glenburn and plays for the state title and a chance to move to New Englands and the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Penn.
