TEMPLE — The Colonial Daughters Chapter of the DAR held their June meeting recently at the home of Melanie Farmer on Varnum Pond in Temple. There were 19 members and two guests present. The group enjoyed a potluck luncheon, followed by a business meeting, with Regent Marcia White presiding. Old and new business was discussed. The President General’s Report was read by Tamalie Paradis, the National Defense News by Joanne Page and an Indian Minute by Constance Hiltz.

Ann Thomas, a member of Koussinoc DAR Chapter Augusta and honorary state regent, presided over the swearing in ceremony for the following new slate of officers: regent, Marcia White; vice regent, Constance Hiltz; secretary, Theo Ross; corresponding secretary, Anne Kendall; chaplain, Nancy Flick; registrar, Joanne Page; historian, Sylvia Adams; librarian, Ann Ladd and treasurer Wilma Rector. These positions are for a two-year period.

The afternoons program was presented by Ann Thomas, who spoke about Claude Broussard, Acadian-Cajun who was one of many French inhabitants in Acadia persecuted by the English in the 1750s. More than 14,000 Acadians were expelled from Acadia between 1755 and 1764 and sent to southern colonies. Broussard and his family became inhabitants of Louisiana and during the American Revolution Claude fought for the rebel cause helping capture the British strongholds of Fort Bute at Bayou Manchac and Baton Rouge.

On July 18, the planning committee will meet in Rangeley at the cottage of Regent White to set up the meeting locations and programs for the coming program year, which is September to June

The chapter has recessed for the summer months; the next meeting will be held in September, place and program to be announced at a later date.
