LEWISTON — Police on Wednesday released the identity of the woman found dead in a Main Street apartment building earlier this week.

Maine State Police said the remains of Danita Brown, 38, of New Gloucester were recovered by the Maine Office of the Chief Medical Examiner on Tuesday. Autopsy and identification were carried out Wednesday.

Police didn’t release Brown’s cause of death.

The renter of the apartment through which Brown’s body was recovered is Bob W. Ryder, 20, who was arrested early Tuesday and was being held without bail on a probation hold at Androscoggin County Jail.

According to Brown’s Facebook page, she has two children, both under the age of 5.

The last posting on her Facebook wall, dated Feb. 15, says: “The biggest thing that pisses me off is that when another girl thinks she’s good enough to take your man from my biggest pet peeve I always say may the best woman win!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”

In the “About Danita” section of her Facebook page, she says: “I’m a mother of two and I’m happy most all the time very good sense of humor love to tell jokes.”

According to the Maine Bureau of Identification, Brown had a history of petty theft charges dating back to the late 1990s. She also faced a misdemeanor charge for misuse of identification in Portland in March 2010.

Lewiston police and Maine State Police spent most of the day Wednesday at the lower portion of the apartment house at 417 Main St., collecting evidence as the investigation continued. They cleared the building at about 5 p.m.

The basement where Brown’s body was found is beneath Ryder’s apartment on the lower floor. On Wednesday night, Ryder’s apartment was vacant except for a kitten left behind.

The walls of the apartment were adorned with an American flag and posters of Fenway Park and Red Sox slugger David Ortiz. On a table covered with paper and pens stood a coffee cup claiming: “My dad is awesome.”

Ryder has a daughter just over a year old.

The apartment above Ryder’s is empty. Knocks on the third-floor door went unanswered Wednesday night.

State Police will continue to investigate Brown’s death with the assistance of Lewiston police. No charges had been filed as of Wednesday night.
