The Sebago-Long Lake Music Festival will present “Voice of the Whale,” the second concert of the 39th season, at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 19, at Deertrees Theater in Harrison. The concert will open with George Crumb’s atmospheric “Vox Balaenae” (Voice of the Whale), continue with a Beethoven string quartet and conclude with Rebecca Clarke’s Piano Trio. Composed in 1971 by American composer George Crumb, “Vox Balaenae” was inspired by the sounds of humpback whales recorded by a marine scientist. Crumb scored the work for flute, cello and piano, all electronically amplified. The musicians play their instruments (and sing) in unexpected ways to depict the sounds of the whale. Theatrical stage lighting is used to help create an oceanic environment, and the musicians wear masks to lessen the human element. Performing with pianist Stephen Manes of California will be cellist Eliot Bailen, above, and flutist Susan Rotholz, both of whom perform regularly in New York City. The concert series will continue on Tuesday evenings through Aug. 9. Tickets are $20, free for anyone under 21. For tickets, call 583-6747 or visit www.sebagomusicfestival.org.
