JAY — A New Hampshire man was injured Monday afternoon after the motorcycle he was driving on Route 4 was struck from behind, police Chief Larry White Sr. said.

Motorcyclist Timothy McDonald, 23, of Center Harbor, was thrown from the bike onto the hood of a van driven by Everett Ayer, 74, of Sumner, and bounced off the hood and down the southbound lane an estimated 35 to 40 feet, Jay police Cpl. Jeffrey Fournier said.

McDonald was taken by a NorthStar Emergency Medical Service ambulance to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston, he said. A nursing supervisor said Monday night that his condition was listed as good.

The accident occurred at 2:24 p.m. north of the intersection of routes 4 and 17 and nearly across from the Jay-Niles Memorial Library.

Both vehicles were traveling north when McDonald slowed the 2011 Harley-Davidson down and Ayer’s 2007 Dodge van struck the back and it pushed the motorcycle into the southbound lane, Fournier said.

That caused the motorcycle to go out of control and it ended up at the side of the road, he said.

Debris including the seat, a sandal and other parts and pieces of the Harley were scattered across the street. Two parallel strips of skid marks were left on the pavement.

Franklin County Sheriff’s Cpl. Kenneth Charles and Deputy Heidi Wilcox reconstructed the accident.

Jay firefighters assisted at the scene and re-routed traffic around the section of Route 4. White and Detective Richard Caton IV assisted Fournier at the scene.

The motorcycle received extensive damage, Fournier said, and the van received damage to the front end.
