LIVERMORE FALLS — About 50 firefighters from several departments responded to a fire reported at 8:33 Tuesday night at a vacant, two-story house on Bridge Street, also known as Route 4.

Livermore Falls police officer Steve Wilkinson said he was first on the scene and flames were showing just inside the front door.

Firefighters quickly had the blaze under control by attacking it from the inside of the building.

The house, owned by Charles and Rose Darling of Livermore, was lightly damaged, Livermore Falls fire Safety Officer Jim Purington said. A “For Rent” sign hung in a window of the second floor.

Charles Darling said he and his wife have owned the house since March and have insurance on it. The residence is near Treat Memorial Library.

An investigator from the Office of the State Fire Marshal was called in to investigate. Livermore Falls Fire Chief Gerry Pineau said state fire investigator Chris Stanford determined that the fire was caused accidentally by a drop light.

Purington said firefighters from Livermore Falls, Livermore, Jay, Wilton and Farmington were on the scene. Firefighters from Fayette and Wayne were on standby at the Livermore Falls Fire Station.
