Lewiston and Auburn, today, do honor to the memory of Senator William P. Frye. Flags will be at half mast, stores, theatres and playgrounds closed during the hours of the service and many buildings will be draped. The funeral will be one of the largest ever held in the State of Maine and will be attended by scores of dignitaries, men high in public and private life.
50 years ago, 1961
Lewiston Public Works Department Director George J. Maher said last night that unless Lewiston residents cooperate in the conservation of water, highly drastic measures may be necessary.
Commenting last night on the hot weather use of lawn and garden sprinklers and backyard swimming pools, Maher said that unless residents observe the sprinkling hours of before 9 a.m. and after 4 p.m., a ban on all outdoor use may be necessary, and those failing to comply with the ban will lose their water service.

The efforts of a Maine motorcycle club will help plenty of sick Lewiston-Auburn area youngsters make their hospital visits more endurable. Members of the Blue Knights Maine Chapter III delivered dozens of toys to St. Mary’s Hospital and Central Maine Medical Center recently as part of a toy ride sponsored by the group. Despite heavy rains, more than two dozen motorcyclists participated in the drive.
