LEWISTON — The Lewiston Auburn Local Consumer Council will hold its monthly meeting from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 24, at B Street Community Center, 57 Birch St.

Guest speakers will be Helen Bailey, a lawyer from the Disability Rights Center to talk about positive or negative treatment in the emergency room or the psych unit in the hospital, and Craig Zurhurst from Western Maine Transportation to talk about the lack of transportation services for people who need to go to the social centers for socialization.

The group is a mental health instrumentality giving a voice and working on public policy with the state.

LEWISTON — The Lewiston-Auburn Duplicate Bridge Club met on Aug. 16 at the Multi-Purpose Center. Winners in Flight A were: 1st, Patricia Quinn and Rosemarie Goodwin; 2nd, Kathleen Burden and Mary Anne Trafton; 3rd, Lorry Letourneau and Jeanine Kivus; 4th, Luke Merry and Mike Quinn.

Winners in Flight B were Kathleen Burden and Mary Anne Trafton. Games are played at 9 a.m. Tuesdays at the center.

The club also met on Aug. 17 at Schooner Estates in Auburn. Winners were: 1st, Mike and Patricia Qunn; 2nd, John Hackett and Leslie Buzzell; 3rd, Anna Vitiello and Lucille Theriault. ArtWalk music

AUBURN — Friday ArtWalk Performances continue with featured artist Kate Schrock at 6 p.m. Friday, Aug. 26, at Dufresne Plaza, adjacent to 84 Lisbon St. The rain location will be at Callahan Hall in the Lewiston Public Library, 200 Lisbon St.

Keachele benefit

MECHANIC FALLS — The MAVReC Car Club will hold a benefit spaghetti supper at the American Legion Post 150 from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 27, for Albert (Tom) Keachele Sr., who is battling renal cell carcinoma. He is a member of the MAVReC Car Club.

The cost will be $8 for adults, $4 for ages 6-10 and free for children under 6. There will also be a silent auction table. The menu will consist of spaghetti, salad, bread, two types of sauce (one with meat and one without), drinks, coffee and plenty of desserts.

Maine wildflowers

TOPSHAM — The Cathance River Education Alliance and the Topsham Public Library will host Dana Cary from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 30, at the library. Cary will talk on wildflowers of Maine and how they can be incorporated into home gardens.

Cary will show examples of common and rare flowers and talk about where these flowers grow and thrive.

The program is for those who enjoy gardening, flowers or simply want to know what they are looking at while hiking through the woods or driving down the highway. Free and open to the public.

Bartending

AUBURN — The Corporate and Community Services department at Central Maine Community College will offer a bartending course from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesdays, Sept. 14 through Nov. 16. The cost is $350 and includes all materials.

Students will learn the basics of professional bartending and mixology and its application in restaurants, clubs and function facilities. This course also includes the Maine Course, a six-hour seminar in the responsible service of alcohol as required by the State of Maine Liquor Commission and the Department of Human Services.

Seniors cookout

LEWISTON — The Lewiston Senior Citizens will have their Welcome Back Cookout on Monday, Sept. 12. Members must purchase tickets by Sept. 7.

The group is also planning the following trips: North Shore Theater on Sept. 28 to see “The King and I.” On Nov. 10, dinner/show in Middleton, Mass. featuring singer/comedian Mark Verselli. A three-day/two-night New Year’s Party with Best of Times is planned at the Sheraton Fourpoint Hotel in Leominster, Mass. from Dec. 30 through Jan. 1, 2012. It includes six meals and six shows with a New Year Gala. A Daytona Beach trip on Feb. 2-17 with Yankee Line Tours. This a bus tour but attendees may fly down on Feb. 4 and return Feb. 15.
