PERU — A fire that destroyed a camp on Worthley Pond early Thursday morning is under investigation by the state Fire Marshal’s Office.

Assistant Fire Chief Tim Holland said the cause of the fire is still undetermined.

The camp was on the east shore and owned by Wayne and Cheryl Sevigny of Mexico. The couple and their three children were not at the camp when the fire started, officials said.

A 911 call was made around 1:20 a.m., believed to be from a resident across the pond who could see the blaze. Due to poor cellphone reception, neighbors Andy and Diane Shorey said they were unable to place an emergency call.

The camp was a total loss and a speed boat parked within feet of the structure was partially melted and the seats charred.

The Sevignys said they purchased the camp in May. Cheryl Sevigny grew up enjoying time at Worthley Pond at the home of her father, Warren Packard.
