WILTON — What should have been a fun afternoon at the races in Oxford County turned tragic for a Wilton man whose mobile home burned to the ground Sunday afternoon.

Wilton fire Chief Sonny Dunham said the fire was called in about 11:54 a.m. Sunday at 258 Pond Road. The trailer belonged to Timothy Toothaker, who was at Oxford Plains Speedway when the blaze broke out. Dunham said Toothaker lived alone and no one else was around at the time of the fire.

Dunham said the 74- by 14-foot trailer was fully engulfed when crews arrived on the scene. More than 35 firefighters from Wilton, Farmington, Jay, East Dixfield and Chesterville battled the blaze until almost 3 p.m.

Dunham said that the mobile home burned so badly that the State Fire Marshal’s Office was unable to determine the cause of the blaze Sunday afternoon. He said that Toothaker had insurance on the property.
