FARMINGTON — A request for a disability variance will come before the town’s Appeals Board at the 6 p.m. meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 7, downstairs in the Municipal Building.
Clinton B. Savage Jr., has applied for a variance to build a wheelchair ramp on the front of his home at 173 Morrison Hill Road.
The ramp would extend across the front lawn to the driveway for wheel chair access into the home’s front door, according to the application.
The Appeals Board needs to approve a variance because the setback doesn’t meet the town’s ordinance standards. Measured from the ramp to the middle of the road, the distance is only 32.5 feet. A 60-foot setback is required, according to code regulations.
Since Marjorie Savage, Clinton’s wife, broke her ankle on July 29 and required surgery on Aug. 3, a wheelchair and walker have helped her around the house. A trip outside the home requires her sons to carry her in and out, she said Friday.
“The only way I can get in and out is for them to carry me,” she said.
The sons are doing the planning and expect to build the wooden structure for the couple, who are both in their 80s, she said.
Without the broken ankle, steps are a challenge for both of them, she said. A ramp isn’t easy but it’s better than being carried. Her sons would have liked to have it done six weeks ago, she added.
The house now near the road was probably built when it was a dirt road and there wasn’t so much traffic, she said. The middle of the road then was probably not the same as it is today.
“We just have to go through the process,” she said.
The proposed ramp meets Americans with Disabilities Act standards and would be constructed by the family, according to the application.
