LIVERMORE FALLS — Authorities believe a fire that caused minor damage to a garage at 33 Bemis St. on Saturday night was arson, Fire Chief Gerry Pineau said.

Firefighters and police conducted a joint investigation and consulted with a state fire investigator, he said.

About 30 firefighters from Livermore Falls, Livermore and Jay and about six trucks responded to the residence after neighbors reported seeing white smoke coming from a garage, Pineau said.

The residence is in a residential area, off Richardson Avenue, which is off Route 4.

When firefighters arrived, heavy smoke was showing. They knocked down the fire quickly, Pineau said.

Fire officials believe the fire was intentionally set in the attic, a loft area used for storage, in the garage, he said. The garage is about 5 feet from the house, Pineau said.

The fire was reported at 6:31 p.m. The owner of the residence, Sherry Corkum, was not home at the time and neither was anyone else, Pineau said.

The fire did not spread to any other structure, he said.

It was the second fire in town in two days. On Friday, a family of nine lost their home at 46 High St. when a fire started in the garage and spread to the house about 1 foot away.

The cause of that fire was ruled undetermined but fire officials believe it had something to do with a rarely used light in the garage, Pineau said Friday.
