FARMINGTON — Hands trained to dribble and shoot made light work of a good deed off the basketball court.

“It was a total surprise that the University of Maine at Farmington basketball team showed up at my house,” Margaret Gould Wescott, a former fine arts professor at UMF, said on Monday.  “UMF basketball coach Dick Meader, assistant coach John Hayes and the team showed up at noon, 20-minutes later my three cords of wood was stacked. I’m so grateful and so touched.”

After noticing the pile of wood by Wescott’s house, Meader said he put out an email request at about 10:30 a.m. Friday morning for the team to gather at Wescott’s home at noon for a community-service project. He told them it wouldn’t take probably more than 30 minutes if most of them were able to get there, he said. He was impressed with the response.

At noon a dozen or 13 members appeared, pitched in and went to work. In less than 20 minutes, the wood was stacked, he said.

While Wescott said she tends to help others a lot, this time it was her turn with the basketball team doing the helping.
