LEWISTON — Several companies from central and western Maine were ranked among the top 40 “Best Places to Work in Maine” announced Tuesday night at an awards and recognition dinner at the Ramada Conference Center put on by the Society for Human Resource Management’s Maine State Council.

The sixth annual “Best Places to Work in Maine” ranking gave Portland-based Consigli Construction Co. Inc. the No. 1 spot in the large company category. Burgess Advertising & Marketing, also located in Portland, took the same honor in the small/medium category.

New Balance Athletic Shoe Inc. of Norway was ranked 8th in the large company category (250 or more U.S. employees), and was the only finalist from Androscoggin, Franklin or Oxford counties. Also notable in the large company categories were L.L. Bean Inc. of nearby Freeport (10th) and Hollywood Slots Hotel & Raceway of Bangor (12th).

In the small/medium category (15-249 U.S. employees),  FISC Solutions of Lewiston (8th), MOUNTAIN LTD of New Gloucester (12th) and Androscoggin Bank of Lewiston (28th) all made the final cut.

The assessment process is administered by the Best Companies Group. It evaluated each company’s employee policies and procedures, as well as responses from the company’s employees to a survey. In August, the group released the 40 companies that made the cut as the overall Best Places to Work.
