100 years ago, 1911

The members of the Cercle Canadien and Musicale Union of Auburn are rehearsing for a minstrel show which is to be given in the opera house in New Auburn on November 16. All jokes and songs will be in the French language and it is expected that this will be the first French minstrel show ever given in New England.

50 years ago, 1961

Lewiston-Auburn news dealers, along with others in the state, will not sell the paperback edition of the Henry Miller book, “The Tropic of Cancer.” The book, which has been widely read throughout Europe for 25 years, was only recently made available in this country. Local news firm officials have stated that they will not accept the books for sale to their distributors. Officials call the book “obscene.”

25 years ago, 1986

Richard Libby of Central Maine Power Co. reported that $3,600 worth of damage to some of the company’s transformers off Lisbon Street was apparently caused by thrown objects. Three bushings were damaged at $1,200 each.
