LEWISTON — L/A Arts and the Lewiston Public Library are joining forces to bring the award-winning documentary, “Race to Nowhere,” to Lewiston/Auburn. The film will be shown in the Library’s Callahan Hall at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 20.
“Race to Nowhere” is both a film and a grassroots movement aimed at changing the current educational policies in the U.S. which are focused on high stakes tests and competitive college admissions. The screening is part of the Fall 2011 Back To School Campaign, an effort to ignite the “Race to Nowhere” conversation and shift the nation’s thinking about education, achievement and success.
Featuring the heartbreaking stories of young people across the country who have been pushed to the brink, educators who are burned out and worried that students aren’t developing the skills they need and parents who are trying to do what’s best for their kids, “Race to Nowhere” points to the silent epidemic in our schools: cheating has become commonplace, students have become disengaged, stress-related illness, depression and burnout are rampant, and young people arrive at college and the workplace unprepared and uninspired.
“Race to Nowhere” is a call to mobilize families, educators, and policy makers to challenge current assumptions on how to best prepare the youth of America to become healthy, bright, contributing and leading citizens.
The film showing is free and open to the public, however donations will be accepted at the door in support of the “Race to Nowhere” movement.
This special event is being held in connection with Lights On Afterschool, a celebration of afterschool programming locally and nationally. Lights On Afterschool is presented by the Maine Afterschool Network in collaboration with the Afterschool Alliance, The Maine Department of Education 21st Century Community Learning Center and L/A Arts. The local Lights On gathering is to be held in Auburn’s Festival Plaza earlier the same day from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. The event features opening remarks from the mayors of both Lewiston and Auburn, youth performances and interactive display exhibits of local programs. The event is free and will refreshments will be provided.
