LD 1376, the legislation that ends same-day voter registration in Maine, was passed for just one reason — to give town and city clerks throughout the state of Maine two business days in which to verify the eligibility of newly registered voters, thereby ensuring fair and accurate elections.

Given that a town office is open (at least) three days per week, and two weeks’ vacation, new voters have (at least) 150 days during the year to go to the town office and register. The whole process might take 20 minutes, at the most.

Failing that, people can register by mail, through the Bureau of Motor Vehicles or any Department of Health and Human Services agency.

The most important fact is this — the only person who can rob you of your right to vote is you.

I will be voting “no” on Question 1 on Nov. 8.
