CHESTERVILLE — Lena Althea Searles, 81, of Chesterville, passed away peacefully Sunday, Oct. 30, at her home.

She was born in Freeman, March 21, 1930, a daughter of Forrest and Alma (Stevens) Pinkham. Lena received her education in Freeman and Kingfield schools. She worked in a variety of manufacturing companies and local stores, but her favorite memory was as dispatcher for Temple Stream Cab Service. Lena was a member of the Farmington Emblem Club. In previous years, she was very active and truly enjoyed activities with her “Sisters” creating many life long friendships.

Lena cared deeply for her family, her animals, and life, despite limitations, always with a smile on her face and never a complaint. Lena loved summertime, bird watching, reminiscing “the good ole days” with family and friends, country music, shopping, and family gatherings.

She saw the good in everything and everyone and will be remembered for her honesty, generosity, kindness of spirit, devotion to everyone she knew, and her love to cook, especially the family favorites of fish chowder, stuffing, and baked beans for which she was famous.

Lena is survived by her children, Ralph Searles Jr. and his companion, Sylvia Cook, of Farmington, Rodney Searles and his wife, Andrea, of Salem, Robert Searles and his wife, Annie, of New Vineyard and Patricia Hardy and her husband, Corey, of Chesterville; special friend, Arthur DeRoche; 10 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; four sisters, Virginia Bachelder of Avon, Rosetta Pinkham of Strong, Hilda Chandler and her husband, Oscar, of Wilton and Roberta Howard of Farmington; three brothers, Bert “Pad” and Wilfred “Chuck” of Freeman and Eugene of Strong; her beloved dog, Rusty; many nieces and nephews; and her “girls” that assisted her with her daily routine.

Lena was predeceased by her parents; brothers, Bernard, Maxwell, William, Burton, Nelson and Malcolm; sisters, Bessy, Winona, Marilyn and Vivian; a granddaughter, Shelly; and several nieces and nephews.
