GRAY — An Otisfield man suffered a minor injury and a new bus had to be called after a car rear-ended a school bus on Route 26 on Tuesday afternoon.

The bus was hit from behind by a Honda Accord driven by Henriette Taft, 76, of Otisfield, as it stopped to let children off at about 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, officer Paul Thorpe of the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office said. Fourteen elementary school students were heading home on the bus at the time of the accident, SAD 15 Interim Superintendent Bruce Beasley said Tuesday evening.

None of the children were injured, Beasley said. A passenger in the Accord, Taft’s husband, Walter, 77, suffered a minor laceration on his hand, Thorpe said.

The car had become wedged beneath the back of the bus, which sustained some damage to its rear bumper, Beasley said. The bus will not be taken out of service for any considerable period of time, Beasley said.

A replacement bus was called for the student passengers, who were stranded at the scene of the accident for about an hour, Thorpe said. Emergency responders, including the Gray Fire Department, were able to keep one lane of traffic open during cleanup, he said.

No charges are pending, Thorpe said.
