100 years ago, 1911

The following article appeared in Wednesday’s issue of Le Messager.

“Have you any idea of the quantity of intoxicating liquor which comes to Lewiston every day from Boston? If the sincere prohibitionists could know it, they surely would be stupefied. It is not an exaggeration to say that this week $25,000 has been sent to Boston in payment for liquor for consumption in families. For instance, a postal sub-station, at the corner of Chestnut and Lincoln streets, has sent about $800,000 in orders, since Monday, and all of this for booze.”

50 years ago, 1961

Guitar-strumming, hip-swinging Elvis Presley apparently doesn’t know that Lewiston Mayor Emile Jacques doesn’t go for the rock ‘n’ roll stuff.

The mayor has received from Los Angeles a colorful Christmas card from Elvis but claims he doesn’t know why. The card says “Aloha,” has holiday greetings and includes a picture of Presley.

“No, I’m not a rock and roll fan,” the mayor insisted to a newsman.

25 years ago, 1986

EAST DIXFIELD — Plans for the 1987 state firefighters convention, which will be held in Mexico and Rumford, were described for members of the Franklin County Firemen’s Association by Chief Scotty Whytock and members of the convention committee here Wednesday night.

The event will be held Sept. 18, 19 and 20 with the two fire departments as co-hosts. This will be the first time Oxford County has hosted the firemen’s convention.
