DEAR SUN SPOTS: Could you please tell us why the city Christmas tree was moved to Dufresne Plaza from Main Street? — Roland, carvergear@inbox.com

ANSWER: For an answer to this question, Sun Spots turned to Megan Bates, deputy director of Lewiston’s Department of Public Works, who responded as follows:

“Years ago — dare I say a couple of decades ago — the Christmas tree lighting celebration was located at Hewlett Square on Main Street. It was moved from that location because the celebration became such a traffic hazard. The tree actually was damaged on Christmas Eve many years ago when the star on the tree weighed the top over in a strong wind. The tree was taken down shortly after.

“The tree-lighting celebration had actually moved to Kennedy Park years before this occurrence, but the attendance did not encourage it to stay there. With the interest from the Lisbon downtown businesses, it was moved to Dufresne Plazas. While a decision has not been made to move the site of the Christmas tree, there is discussion taking place for what might be considered to be a more suitable location.”

Readers with an opinion about where the tree might best be located should contact their city councilor. They might also want to write an editor to the letter, which city officials are sure to notice, as will fellow Lewiston residents.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: I need your help in acquiring the address for the young lady from Scarborough by the name of Christine Rousselle, who wrote a letter about welfare that made the headlines, plus more than 400,000 replies or views online. I’d appreciate your help, which I know you can do, as I read your column every day. I don’t have a computer. — No Name, No Town

ANSWER: Sun Spots is sorry to disappoint such a faithful reader, but even if she could find a home address for Christine, which is unlikely, her editors probably wouldn’t want her to print it. Too many people might use that address inappropriately. (One big advantage of the Internet is that you don’t have to reveal your physical address and risk an altercation, or worse.)

Christine’s blog is published at www.thecollegeconservative.com, so you could contact her online through it at the library. Or you could try writing her at her school, Providence College, 1 Cunningham Square, Providence, RI 02918

DEAR SUN SPOTS: The University of Southern Maine’s Franco-American Collection organizes monthly sing-along sessions in which local residents are invited to sing their favorite French tunes. We are lucky to have a talented group of local musicians and singers to lead us.

One of our members, however, is looking for a xylophone or glockenspiel to play, and we thought one of your readers might have a used instrument they no longer play which they would like to donate to the collection.

Please contact me for more information. — James Myall, collection coordinator, franco@usm.maine.edu, 753-6545
