Roast pork dinner

NEW SHARON — A pork loin roast dinner will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 8, at the new Masonic Lodge, Route 2. Eat in or take out.

The meal includes mashed potatoes, baby carrots, peas, rolls, pies, tea and coffee. The cost is $8 for adults, $6 for ages 6-12 and free for under 6.

The meal is sponsored by the Franklin Lodge 123 and will benefit the building fund.

African ministry

FARMINGTON — Steve Hoyt, construction manager for Engineering Ministries International East Africa, will be at Old South First Congregational Church at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 10. He will discuss the organization’s work in Uganda and their focus on fostering leadership qualities among Ugandan men.

The program will open with a presentation of African drumming by Hoyt’s children after which childcare will be provided during the talk. Refreshments will be served.

Seed savers

FARMINGTON — Farmington Seed Saver Group will present “Growing Sweet Corn, Flour Corn, Popcorn and Saving Seeds in Franklin County” from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 19, at the Farmington Grange Hall, Bridge Street. Admission is $5.

Speakers will be Pamela Prodan and Conrad Heeschen of Wilton and Dave Kidd of West Freeman.

Learn from three local corn growers about the history and challenges of dehybridizing and pollinating techniques to preserve heirloom corn. Prodan will describe the history and uses of a heritage yellow flint corn, grown over four generations by the Mosher Family in Wilton. She will explain hand pollination.

Heeschen will discuss his efforts to dehybridize a favorite sweet corn which was discontinued by the supplier. He developed a delicious open-pollinated sweet corn which is well adapted to this area. Prodan and Heeschen save many of their own seeds and have been MOFGA member since the early 1970s.

Kidd, a logger and farmer, will talk about his efforts to continue growing a variety of white popcorn that has been grown for more than 70 years in the Strong and West Freeman area. Light refreshements will be served.

Chowder lunch

FARMINGTON — The Fairbanks Union Church will hold a fish chowder luncheon from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 20. The luncheon includes chowder, biscuit, pickles, cheese, dessert and coffee/tea beverage. For local delivery, within five miles of the church, call the church at 778-4705. The donation for the luncheon is $6.

Children’s activities

RANGELEY — The Hands-On Children’s Activity Area, compliments of The Wilhelm Reich Museum’s Discovery Room, will be hosted by Dominique and Charles Goude at the Rangeley Inn from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 21, as a part of Rangeley’s Snodeo.

There will be a jump & slide, ball tent, snowflake craft, tie-dye shirts to make and keep, a microscope, stethoscopes, prism, magnet and hook games, static tubes and more.
